HCGS Meeting Feb 13, 2016 Filipino Genealogy

The meeting of the Honolulu County Genealogical Society was held Saturday, Feb 13, 2016 at the usual place, Manoa Gardens Community room, 2790-9 Kahaloa Dr., Honolulu, Hawaii, 9:00 am.
The speaker was Dan Nelson, who gave a very interesting presentation on Filipino Genealogy.     Dan explained that one problem doing research for Philippines is the surnames. People chose names per dictums of Spanish governors in 1800's. In 1898 the Spanish were booted out; a lot of records destroyed. During the Japanese occupation, some records were hidden in the jungle.
In 1898 the Philippines came under US control. In Hawaii, during Territorial days, the 1900 Organic Act ended contract labor, this impacted Philippine immigration to Hawaii. In 1909 the Filipinos started coming to Hawaii.
The next meeting will be March 12, 2016.  The speaker will be Amy Tomita Casey on "Japanese Genealogy."
