Where do you look? Where do you find old newspaper? There are many wonderful online sites:
1. A free site is the Library of Congress. Search their Chronicling American section.
2. Websites for genealogical groups, county societies and libraries, etc.
3. Subscriptions to My Heritage, Find My Past, Ancestry, Family Search
4. Subscriptions to Newspapers.com and Genealogybank.com

Highlights:
In Family Search, go to the Search and use Catalog.
In Genealogybank.com, go to the Search>Browse>Collections. Helpful features are Clipping and Help.
Search through Collections>Newspaper Archives for birth records, mortgage records, passenger lists and  obituaries.
In Newspapers.com, go to the Search, enter a keyword or name. You also can search for newspapers by location.
MyHeritage is great for translating foreign papers. Donna added another translation site to use is Google Lens.
If you have the Microsoft 365 program you are able to make corrections to improve an image.
Donna recommends learning to do screen shots. She also demonstrated how to crop/clip articles.
Donna demonstrated searching the various sites for an article on her relative, William Hague. The article was in the Des Moines Register dated April 24, 1906.
Bella Rivera shared using Newspapers.com to find articles regarding the drowning death of her father’s little sister after a name search failed to come up with any results. She also used Newspapers.com to research history of her employer, Alexander Brothers Ltd.

A brief discussion ensued regarding preserving our precious data as we talked about recent storms and the loss of power in some areas. To have a computer back-up battery was encouraged. Your data will be saved and it will give you time to power off when the electricity goes out. Also discussed was the importance of having an external hard drive, a backup program and list of your accounts and passcodes for your family when you pass.
Various storage services will close an account once they discover a person has died. Some services will allow co-owners. Forever allows designated heirs to take over the account of a deceased member.
Challenge – Begin scanning your precious photos into your computer. Then back them up into a computer Cloud storage service, or use a trusted storage provider, such as Forever.
Karin will forward via email an invitation to open up a free Forever account which includes free 2G storage (about 300 to 400 photos).
Susan Victor shared how moved she felt attending a family reunion of her husband’s family earlier this morning. A photo of the original immigrant who came to Hawaii for the Victor family was shared.
Kathy Hudson had shared earlier that she may have breakthrough in finding the names for the parents of an infamous hanged relative.
Karin Jones issued an invitation to join the family in celebration of Stan’ 90th birthday.
His actual birthday is March 24, 2021. To celebrate, two (2) drive-by events have been set up. Cupcakes will be passed out.   The first will be on March 20, 2021, in front of their home, between the hours of 2 to 4 p.m.   The second will be on March 28, 2021, at Kailua Community Church.

Extra Notes from discussions throughout the meeting:
Free seminars are available from the Salt Lake City Family History Center – shared by Kathy Hudson and Faith Burgwinkel.
There were so many great seminars during RootsTech 2021. We were reminded that the seminars were recorded and available for viewing up to a year. Go back to the RootsTech website.  Anyone can sign up for a free guest account at My Heritage. Use the free trial time to check out what My Heritage offers and then decide if you want to sign up for a subscription – shared by Lenore Hansen-Stafford.
Lenore also mentioned the new My Heritage photo enhancement feature – animating family photos.  Donna expanded by providing a demonstration of the “Deep Nostalgia” feature.  Go to My Heritage > Family Tree > Animate Photos > upload a photo from your computer. There are five (5) animation positions to choose from. Amazing!

Our meeting concluded around 11:56 a.m.
