HCGS Feb 8, 2014 Meeting - Story of Dorothy Shatz (Polishuk) Deutch

The meeting of Feb 8th 2014 was at the Manoa Gardens Housing community room.

Kelly, the daughter of member Faith Burgwinkel, presented a informative method of creating a basic Power Point slide show presentation.  She passed out a multi-page handout on the steps to do one.  Additionally she mentioned that users of Macintosh can use a similar method to create a slide show on Macintosh software.  Members were challenged to work on their Power Point or similar software at home and next month report on how they were doing, and bring questions, if needed.

Jim Deutch has been working on his family history for twenty five years.  He is creating a book using Microsoft Word which includes text and photos.  This book is entitled "The Life and Times of Dorothy Shatz (Polishuk) Deutch," his mother.    His 36 page biography included much more than dates and places.  He included the stories he had heard growing up about this family, and stories of his own to bring his mother, and her ancestors, to life.

Dorothy Deutch was born with the name Devora Polishuk, in  Ostropol, Ukraine, Russia about 29 Sep 1906.  She immigrated to America at Baltimore Harbor on 11 July 1912 as a teenager with her grandfather, Echuna Polishuk, and his second wife Tila and two of Dorothy's siblings.       Dorothy's birth mother Frima Riva (Shatrz) Polishuk died of typhoid fever; her father's name was Isriel Polishuk.
Below are a few of the pictures Jim is using to illustrate his book.  Anyone finding a connection to this family is requested to add a comment to this blog to be able to contact Jim.
