HCGS Meeting 11 Nov 2017 - The Melungeons

The Honolulu County Genealogical Society met on Nov 11, 2017 at 9 am.
The speaker was Todd Beckham. He is a past board member of the Melungeon Historical Association.  Ann Sloat first heard this community of people existed at the recent FGS conference that Stan Yon and I attended in Pittsburgh.  He gave a fascinating session and we've become more aware of the Melungeons and their history near the Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky area.
We have several new things happening this month.. First, we have a service called "mailchimp" that allows members to receive the meeting notice personally by email.  In addition, new members can join the list themselves  through a link that we can make available on our web page (not yet, but soon).  It has several other benefits such as a template for sending out notices such as this one - easier for me once I figure it all out.  Secondly, as you may have noticed, we have an email for our society. It is honcountygen@gmail.com and will be on our new business cards along with our website and blog.  We also have letterhead primarily so we can change the ownership of our post office box although I am sure we will find more uses for it as well.
The December meeting will be a Pot-Luck Luncheon and Gift Exchange.

DIRECTIONS to the meeting site:
The Keola Ho’onanea high rise is centrally located between N School St and N Vineyard St. and between Liliha St and Nuuanu Ave.  It’s across the river (Nuuanu Steam) from Foster Botanical Garden and next to the H1.  The meeting room is on the basement level.  It’s a seven-minute walk from the bus stop on Liliha Street and Vineyard.

There is free on-street parking on A’ala or on Vineyard.  Car-pooling is a good idea, and arrive early to find somewhere to park.   There is a loading area by the door for those to unloading refreshments, or projector, etc.   A handicap parking space may be available. Please don’t park in the building’s lot unless it is marked for visitor.
