Minutes of the March 9, 2019 meeting:
As
President Stanley Yon was absent, Vice President Stan Jones called the meeting
to order at 9:05 a.m.
Announcements
included the following:
Donna Wendt told us there is a revolution going on in genealogy and it’s
DNA - Thrulines on Ancestry in a beta format is not so perfect but it does make
it easier to match the family trees connected to one's own family. Donna recommended RootsTech 2019 in S.L.C. on
Youtube. Google it. Crista Cowan, a top genealogist and the #1
genealogist on Ancestry, did a broadcast, "What You Don't Know About
Ancestry."
Stan Jones warned of scams in genealogy and scams in general.
The April meeting will be presented by Stanley Yon on Pennsylvania,
specifically immigrants to the US from the Palatinate region.
Donna may do a future program on Wales; and Stan Jones one on names.
We then reintroduced ourselves.
V.P.
Jones announced that we need more members for the Board. Larry Meyers was
approved as a new board member.
It
was pointed out to us that there is a subscription on-line,
"Storyworth" which emails the subscriber for answers to
questions about his life and subsequently publishes a book re. same.
There was a negative comment posted on Facebook about advertisements
included in the book.
We
took a break for wonderful snacks provided by Angela and Martha!
Presentation:
Sonny Gay was the featured presenter,
focusing on why the LDS does genealogy. Apparently, the church strives to
redeem the dead. Brigham Young University gave degrees early on in
genealogy, so it appears that this philosophy was an early part of the church. Sonny passed out forms that LDS uses and the
Elizabeth Shown Mills glossary. He
suggests doing what he does when going to other states, checking the laws there
for their regulations, as each state varies.
There
is the International Genealogical Index (IGI), a family history data base on www.FamilySearch.org that lists millions of names around the world.
Faith
suggested "Family Search," and also gave further
explanation of LDS tenets. LDS believes genealogy is a sacred work
because they believe in eternal families.
We
discussed local Family History Centers of the Mormon Church and how different
they can be depending on the volunteers at each one. Donna said that LDS
is no longer sending films to the Family History Centers but on Family Search
one can see an icon for either finding the source on the FamilySearch website,
or if it can be viewed at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. It
was noted that Family History consultants are receiving more vigorous training.
For
local vital records of the 1800's, see the Hawai'i State Archives.
Respectfully
submitted,
Leilani
